How to clean DVDs and CDs It is always a good idea to store your DVDs in there covers. Avoid leaving them out in the open where they are vulnerable to gathering dust, dirt and getting knocked about. Try to avoid touching the under side of the disc with your fingers as this leads to a build up of smudges and grim which can make the disc skip. When your DVDs start to skip it is generally something that a simple clean can fix. To clean them hold the disk by the edge making sure not to touch the under side. Using a clean, lint free cloth gently wipe the surface from the center moving to the outer edge. You need to make sure that you wipe across the disc. Wiping in a circular motion can cause damage to the disc by creating micro scratches on the surface. You can also use a dampened cloth with a very mild soap and water solution. You must never use household cleaners or abrasive solvents as these will damage your disc. If your disc does get scratches that cause playback problems there are products available which can fix these scratches and get the DVD or CD playing again. Here a list of the products available. Storage DVDs and CDs should always be kept in there covers and should be stored in a cool place free from moisture.
